CASEIFICIO VAL D’ORCIA

A cooperative society established on 18 December 1964, the company was founded out of the need to protect an activity that was growing significantly in the Val d’Orcia during those years: SHEEP FARMING.
In fact, during that period there was an exodus of shepherds from Sardinia who were transferring with their flocks to the “CONTINENT”. At that time, the Val d’Orcia (Orcia Valley) was a land that offered placement opportunities to these new families since the local peasants were abandoning the farms where they lived to move to neighbouring towns. Everything that was needed to guarantee a future in this field and to increase the value of the area’s economy already existed in the valley. Out of all these factors arose the need to protect and to make this “new/old” activity go forward. The parish priest at that time, “DON OSCAR GIACOMINI”, thought that setting up a dairy seemed like an ideal solution since it could build a future that in that moment was missing. He, therefore, made himself the promoter of this initiative and thought about uniting all interested parties in order to form a Cooperative. Over time, this concern has been successful at accomplishing this task, responding to all of the sector’s needs. Today, there are 150 members that contribute about 11.000.000 litres of sheep’s milk annually. One of the fundamental results of this world is having succeeded in keeping stable the price of raw materials on the market, serving as a filter for regularizing supply and demand for both its own members and others, permitting fair compensation to all Our dairy has also received a lot of recognition, such as with the prize given to them in 1990, and which they still hold, as producer of the “BEST PECORINO CHEESE IN ITALY”.
